Rethinking Temporomandibular Joint in Health and Disease: At Diagnosis and Interventional Level

The stomatognathic system is an extremely complex integration that involves interaction of skeletal, neuromuscular and dental tissues. Temporomandibular joint is a key element and the nucleus of structural and functional interrelationship of stomatognathic system. Disturbances in temporomandibular joint produce cardinal signs and symptoms. Though, these are not life threatening but their proper management relate to improvement in the Quality of Life and reduces the need for future health care and restoration of normal function. Disturbances in temporomandibular joint can be dental/non-dental in origin and are considered to be sub-classification of musculoskeletal disorder relate to somatic and neurologic symptoms. Therefore, patients present with interrelated somatic and neurologic symptoms. The conventional independent dental/medical therapy seemed fairly ineffective and result in frustrated clinician and dissatisfied patients, unnecessary expenditure of medical resources. Hence, a united, unified effort of interdisciplinary, multiple specialists’ team may result in complete understanding of the associated dental/medical condition with proper diagnosis based on precise, broader definition.
